The Leaders Who Keep Growing Make One Decision Differently

From the Confidant's Chair

Stewarding What’s Next

The hardest part of leadership isn’t reaching the next level. It’s becoming the person capable of carrying it.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been recording conversations for a podcast I’m launching soon.  I have been talking with leaders from different industries, with different stories and very different kinds of pressure.

Yet one insight kept surfacing.

At some point in every meaningful leadership journey, the conversation shifts from ambition…to agency.

Agency is the moment you realize that no one else is coming to carry the weight for you. No one else is going to raise the standard, make the hard call, or break the pattern that is no longer serving you.

You must choose it.

And choosing it changes you.

The Elite Athletic Mindset: How to Lead Under Pressure and Perform When It Counts

The next level of leadership rarely arrives as a reward. The patterns we find ourselves in are often due to our choices. Just yesterday, I sat at my desk flustered. It was in that moment that I paused and acknowledged the moment. I recognized the trigger to my response. The next move was the agency.

It was a responsibility. It was my responsibility to decide differently. It was my responsibility to choose in that moment how to shift and let go of habits that may have helped me succeed in an earlier season but could not take me where I need to go now.

That’s not always easy to admit. Sometimes the thinking that helped build one chapter is not the thinking that will sustain the next one. Sometimes the advice you have leaned on for years is no longer enough. Sometimes, the people you look to for guidance cannot help you in the next season, simply because they have never been there themselves.

That’s when leadership becomes deeply personal.

You start to see that growth is not just about working harder or wanting more. It is about stewarding what is in front of you with self-awareness, honesty, and intention. It is about taking responsibility for the kind of leader this next season requires you to become.

I’m looking forward to sharing more of the journey with you. In fact, what are you stewarding right now?

You’ve got this!

The Science Behind It

Our brains are wired to prefer familiarity. Even when growth is good for us, the unknown can still feel like a threat. When leaders step into greater responsibility, the brain often responds by increasing stress and cognitive load. That is part of why even highly capable people can fall back into familiar habits, familiar advice, and familiar ways of thinking when the stakes get higher.

But elite performers understand something important.

They don’t wait until pressure arrives to prepare for it.

They condition their thinking ahead of time.

Because leadership under pressure is not simply strategic.

It’s neurological.

And the leaders who sustain performance are the ones who train their minds to stay clear when uncertainty increases.

The Conditioning Rep

Try this simple conditioning practice this week.

Before making your next important decision, pause and ask yourself:

“Am I reacting to pressure… or leading with clarity?”

That pause re-engages the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for vision, judgment, and long-term thinking.

One question.

One rep.

That’s how leadership conditioning begins.

 Audio Reflection

I recorded a short reflection this week about something many leaders quietly wrestle with:

The decision to choose you.

When leadership pressure intensifies, identity can easily become entangled with performance.

This reflection will help you separate the two.

Moment Before the Moment

Before your next leadership moment this week, ask yourself:

“Is this the version of me capable of stewarding what’s next?”

Leadership pressure does not reveal who you are.

It reveals what you’ve been conditioned.

A Line to Carry With You

“Excellence is never a default.
It’s a decision you make when no one is coming to raise your standard.”

Forward This to a Leader

If you know a leader stepping into a new chapter this year, send this their way.

The best leaders don’t grow alone.

They grow in conversation with others who are willing to think honestly about the responsibility of leadership.

Next week, I’ll share something new with this community first — the next chapter of this work and the home where it will live.

For now, my encouragement is simple:

Leadership expands faster than identity grows.

The leaders who thrive are the ones willing to grow into the responsibility of what they’re building.

Keep going.

You’re closer than you think.
